Planter Pitfalls: Emergence Issues

How to Improve Emergence Issues

Emergence Issue Triggers:

Moisture

Oxygen

Temperature

Ground Conditions

Residue

Not all of these emergence issues can be improved this season, but we may be able to adjust the setup of the planter to battle others.

Harvest and tillage practices can leave behind a lot of residue. This residue can act as a sponge if it finds its way close to or into the seed bed. It can absorb moisture and valuable fertilizer or treatments and hold it away from the seed.

Adding residue knives onto the combine helps to break down residue from stalks faster in the field. In addition, the row cleaners on the planter should run on top of the soil and sweep away any residue that is left when set correctly.

Make sure the closing system is also set correctly so it covers the seed without creating a firm pack. In this case, each seed can get the oxygen and moisture it needs. Too harsh of a closing system can stunt the growth of the plant and its root structure. Thus, the plant will require additional energy and nutrients to push to the surface of the soil and for the roots to branch out.
